Because of the proliferation of over-refined, packaged foods in our culture, we have become, as a people, over-exposed to more and more refined starches, sugar, salt, and a witches brew of chemicals including synthesized hormones. The caffiene interferes with the proper digestion of the sugars in the donut, which end up as triglycerides and are stored as excess fat. On top of that, the body chemistry is shifted dramatically to the acidic - in fact, it's not uncommon for coffee and a donut to cause heartburn. By substituting Green Tea in place of coffee (and cola beverages) you can reduced caffeine intake by over 90%.

Aspartame - sugar is the less of three evils. Aspartame when metabolized breaks down into amino acids and METHANOL. When methanol is further oxidized, it is converted into formaldehyde and formic acid. Formic acid is an extremely virulent neurotoxin that attacks the autonomic and the central nervous systems. The optic nerves are especially vulnerable. Over a long period of time, you can slowly saute' (fry) the nerves in your body by gulping away on those diet drinks (and other 'foods'?) that are loaded with aspartame. As bad as it is, simple sugar in moderation is a better bet than aspartame. As to acidity, almost all of the materials that you ingest that contain aspartame (and refined sugar) are acidic.

HFCS - simple sugar is the less of these two evils, too. HFCS is an acronym for high-fructose corn syrup, the most popular sweetner in the food industry because it's orders of magnitude sweeter than simple sugar and it's very cheap to produce from chemically-altered corn starch. However, the body over-reacts to the excessive fructose (grape sugar) by driving up insulin which stores both the fructose and glucose in the form of triglycerides as fat. HFCS interferes with the hormone leptin and stimulates ghrelin which causes you to feel hungry and binge eat.

The 80/20 Rule - Whether we're talking calories or grams by weight of foods, there's a decent rule of thumb that 4 grams of alkaline food materials balances every gram of acidic foods. In general, your alkaline foods are your dark green vegetables and most low glycemic fruits. Your acidic foods are the animal meats, dairy, fats and oils, and starchy vegetables. Some Powerful Alkalyzers. Anything with the word "Green" in it is almost a sure bet to be alkaline. Another sleeper on the alkaline side of the equation is flax seeds. Even though flax seed oil is acidic (it gets rancid very quickly if not stored properly), those little flax seeds are a wonder for your diet. Try using a coffee grinder to grind a couple of tablespoons full of the seeds each day. Put the resulting flax meal in your Green Salad and enjoy an alkaline treat that is loaded with goodness and here's why: Flax seeds are rich in the essential fatty acids (EFA's) like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
